Ather 450S Electric Scooter Production Starts: Affordable Mobility
Ather Energy, an Indian electric vehicle startup, has started the production of its latest electric scooter, the Ather 450S, at its new manufacturing facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. The Ather 450S is an upgraded version of the Ather 450, which was launched in 2018 and received positive feedback from the customers and critics. The Ather 450S offers improved performance, features, and range than its predecessor and aims to provide affordable and eco-friendly mobility to the urban commuters.
The Ather 450S is priced at Rs 1.28 lakh (ex-showroom) and will be available in three colour options: Grey, White, and Mint Green. The electric scooter will be initially sold in Bengaluru and Chennai, where the company has set up its experience centres and charging stations. The company plans to expand its presence to other cities such as Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, etc. in the coming months.

Design and Features
The Ather 450S sports a sleek and futuristic design with a sharp LED headlight, a digital instrument cluster, a tail light with integrated indicators, and a side stand sensor. The electric scooter has a lightweight aluminium frame that gives it a kerb weight of 108 kg. The electric scooter also has a spacious under-seat storage that can fit a full-face helmet.
The electric scooter features a 7-inch touchscreen dashboard that can display various information such as speed, battery level, range, navigation, ride statistics, etc. The dashboard also supports Bluetooth connectivity and can sync with the user’s smartphone via the Ather app. The app can provide features such as remote monitoring, over-the-air updates, theft alert, geofencing, etc.
The electric scooter also features a reverse mode that can help the user to park or manoeuvre in tight spaces. The electric scooter also features a smart key that can unlock the scooter without any physical contact.
Performance and Battery
The Ather 450S is powered by a BLDC motor that can deliver a peak power of 5.4 kW and a peak torque of 22 Nm. The motor is coupled with a belt drive transmission that can provide smooth and linear acceleration. The electric scooter can achieve a top speed of 80 kmph and can accelerate from 0 to 40 kmph in just 3.3 seconds.
The electric scooter has three riding modes: Eco, Ride, and Sport. The Eco mode offers the maximum range and efficiency, while the Ride mode offers a balance between performance and range. The Sport mode offers the maximum performance and thrill.
The electric scooter is equipped with a 2.9 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that can provide a range of up to 85 km on a single charge in Eco mode. The battery pack can be charged from zero to 80 percent in just one hour using the company’s fast charging network called Ather Grid. The company claims that it has installed over 100 charging points across Bengaluru and Chennai and plans to add more in other cities soon.
The battery pack can also be charged from zero to 100 percent in about five hours using a home charger called Ather Dot. The home charger can be installed at the user’s residence or workplace and can be controlled via the Ather app.
The battery pack comes with a warranty of three years or unlimited kilometres, whichever comes first.
Safety and Suspension
The Ather 450S has disc brakes on both the front and rear wheels that can provide effective braking performance. The electric scooter also has regenerative braking that can recover some of the energy lost during braking and extend the range of the battery. The electric scooter also has anti-lock braking system (ABS) that can prevent wheel lock-up and skidding during emergency braking.
The electric scooter has telescopic forks on the front and a mono-shock absorber on the rear that can provide a comfortable ride quality on different road conditions. The electric scooter also has alloy wheels with tubeless tyres that can offer better grip and stability on wet and slippery surfaces.
Price and Availability
The Ather 450S is priced at Rs 1.28 lakh (ex-showroom) in India. The price includes GST, road tax, registration fee, insurance fee, smart card fee, etc. The price does not include any subsidy or incentive from the state or central government.
The electric scooter will be available for purchase on the company’s official website or at its experience centres in Bengaluru and Chennai. The company will also offer doorstep delivery and service for its customers.
