Malayalam actor Vinayakan faces backlash for ‘who is this Chandy?’ remark

Malayalam actor Vinayakan finds himself embroiled in controversy due to insensitive comments he made about the late former Kerala chief minister, Oommen Chandy, who passed away two days ago. Following these remarks, a Congress activist filed a police complaint against the actor for his disparaging words about the departed political leader.
In a video that quickly went viral on Facebook, the actor questioned the significance of Oommen Chandy, asking “who is this Oommen Chandy?” and criticizing the state’s decision to declare three days of mourning for his demise.
Moreover, Vinayakan also expressed dissatisfaction with the media’s extensive coverage of the procession carrying Chandy’s mortal remains to his hometown, Puthuppally, in Kottayam district.
The video faced severe backlash on social media, prompting widespread criticism from various quarters. As a result, Vinayakan later took down the video from his Facebook account.
The Congress party, expressing strong disapproval of Vinayakan’s offensive remarks against Chandy, took action by filing a police complaint on Thursday, seeking appropriate measures to be taken against the actor.
Oommen Chandy, a two-time chief minister of Kerala, breathed his last at the age of 79 while undergoing cancer treatment at a private hospital in Bengaluru on Tuesday. His passing has left a void in the political landscape, and his contributions to the state are being mourned by many.
