History
National Engineer’s Day in India was first celebrated in 1968 by the Institution of Engineers (India) to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, a renowned Indian engineer and statesman. In the field of engineering, Sir Visvesvaraya was a pioneer who significantly influenced the growth of India’s infrastructure. He was instrumental in the development of dams, irrigation networks, and other projects such as the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam in Karnataka, the flood protection system for Hyderabad, and the Bhadravati Iron and Steel Works. He was also a visionary leader who served as the Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918 and implemented several reforms in education, industry, and agriculture. He was honoured with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 1955.

The 2023 National Engineer’s Day theme is ‘Engineering for a Sustainable Future’. This theme reflects the importance of engineering in achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are a set of 17 global goals that aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure peace and prosperity for all by 2030. Engineers have a vital role in designing and implementing solutions that are environmentally friendly, socially inclusive, and economically viable. Some of the areas where engineers can contribute to sustainable development are renewable energy, clean water and sanitation, smart cities, green buildings, waste management, and disaster resilience.
