The squad was announced by Cricket Australia on Monday, 4 September 2023, with eight players making their debut World Cup appearance, including captain Cummins. The squad consists of a mix of experienced and young players, who have shown promising performances in the recent ODI series against England and India. The squad is coached by Andrew McDonald, who expressed his optimism and confidence in the team’s potential and talent.

Some of the key strengths of this team are:

  • A world-class top three batsmen in David Warner, Steve Smith and Aaron Finch, who can provide a solid foundation for the innings and score runs at a brisk pace. Warner and Smith are among the top 10 T20I batsmen in the world, while Finch holds the record for the two highest T20I scores.
  • A formidable bowling attack led by Pat Cummins, who is one of the best fast bowlers in the world and can trouble any batsman with his pace, accuracy and variations. He is supported by other quality bowlers like Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Adam Zampa and Glenn Maxwell.
  • A balanced team composition with experienced players, all-rounders and young talents, who can adapt to different conditions and situations. The team has players like Marcus Stoinis, Cameron Green, Mitch Marsh and Alex Carey, who can provide depth and firepower to the batting and bowling departments.
  • A strong overseas T20 record and a history of winning major tournaments. The team has won more than 60 per cent of their T20Is and has reached the final of the T20 World Cup twice (2010 and 2020). The team has also won the ODI World Cup a record five times (1987, 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2015).
