As the competition in the AI landscape intensifies, Apple is taking advanced steps by developing its own artificial intelligence large language models internally. According to Bloomberg News, Cupertino has been working on a chatbot service, internally referred to as “Apple GPT” by some engineers.

The company has constructed its own internal infrastructure, codenamed “Ajax,” which will serve as the foundation for building large language models to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Bard, and Meta’s Llama. While the framework was first built last year and currently operates on Google Cloud, access to the chatbot remains limited within Apple. However, there are indications that Apple could make a significant AI announcement as early as next year.

This move demonstrates Apple’s determination to make its mark in the generative AI space, especially after the remarkable success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which gained widespread popularity among users. In response to ChatGPT’s surprise success, Google and Microsoft have also introduced their own rival AI chatbots.

Although Cupertino rarely uses the term “artificial intelligence,” it is no secret that the company extensively employs AI across its products, including the widely-used voice assistant, Siri.

Earlier this year, Apple made headlines by prohibiting employees from using ChatGPT and the Microsoft-owned GitHub Copilot, an AI code-writing assistant, internally. Additionally, the company’s acquisition of two AI startups in 2020 provided significant hints about its long-term plans to integrate AI into its core products and applications.

During the company’s quarterly earnings call, CEO Tim Cook revealed that Apple aims to “weave” AI into its products. However, he also expressed caution about the future of the technology, recognizing the challenges and complexities associated with AI development.

Interestingly, earlier this week, mobile chipmaker Qualcomm announced its collaboration with Meta to bring the social media giant’s new large language model, Llama 2, to run on Qualcomm chips in phones and PCs starting in 2024.

With Apple’s efforts in developing ‘Apple GPT,’ the AI chatbot space is witnessing fierce competition, and consumers can expect exciting advancements in AI-driven technologies from major players in the industry.
