COPD with Stem cell Treatment
BY: The News Voice
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a progressive lung disease that makes it difficult to breathe.
The two main types of COPD are chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Many with COPD have combination of both.
Stem cells are very essential to every organism and share 3 characteristics: - renewability - adaptability - replication
They are obtained from human embryos called blastocysts that are available in vitro fertilization.
Stem cells are dormant in adult body and don't divide unless activated by an illness or injury. They can be used to heal or regrow damaged tissue.
Stem cells can be used to reduce inflammation, building new lung tissue and stimulating the formation of new capillaries
The FDA hasn't approved the stem cell treatment for COPD and the trials haven't advanced beyond phase II
Clinical trials in humans are yet to produce satisfactory results that were observed in animals
If this treatment does turn out successful, there will be no need to go through painful lung transplantation.
