Buying the right machine can last for years. Don't get tempted for 'cheap deals'.

Don't be persuaded by do it all. Consider your budget and the time you will spend on it. For the rare alterations, it would be waste to spend too much.
Don't buy a 'beginners' sewing machine or the one that will overwhelm you with all its options. Buy one that will grow with you.
Beginners, students into sewing want to buy computerized ones. They are great if you have the budget but it's better to save for other materials.
Sewing machine features to take into account-
Stitch options are to be taken into account along with seam allowance. These are the most important features.
The cheaper ones may not come with buttonhole attachment but bobbin placement makes huge difference to stitching quality.
Some machines come with only a couple of sewing presser feet. So, if you want to sew invisible zips you need to buy that foot separately.
