A neutropenic diet is good for people with cancer as they have weakened immune system due to the disease. Here are few techniques to avoid infection.
Proper hand wash is the first important step to food safety. Wash your hands with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds.
Rinse fresh fruits and vegetables under warm running water. Even thick-skinned fruits like melons, oranges should be washed to avoid bacteria into fruit when cutting it.
Use separate cutting boards for meat and vegetables. Avoid wooden boards.
Avoid raw and undercooked meat, fish, eggs and shellfish. Even raw fruits, vegetables and sprouts should be avoided.
Avoid salad bars, buffets and potlucks. You tend to not know the quantity you consume.
Avoid unpasteurized products like, unpasteurized diary products (milk, cheese and paneer) as well as unpasteurized honey and juice.
Avoid packaged foods that are past their 'use by' or expiration dates.
Avoid leftover foods. It is important to follow food storage and reheating guidelines if you plan to prepare food ahead of time.
