Thyroid Stimulating Hormone Test
BY: The News Voice
A TSH test is to monitor the thyroid gland to see if it's working the way it should. You can check if it's overactive (hyperthyroidism) or underactive (hypothyroidism).
This test can determine thyroid levels and identify any disorders before you have symptoms.
The test needs some blood to be drawn from your body which is sent to be analyzed in a lab.
The test measures how much of this hormone is in your blood. The hormone is produced by the pituitary gland in your brain.
If left untreated, a thyroid disorder can cause serious health problems.
Some drugs can affect thyroid function, like lithium. So, it's better to let your doctor know what medications you are taking.
Higher levels of TSH means underactive thyroid and lower levels indicates overactive thyroid.
For underactive thyroid, the doctor will give a synthetic hormone pill to regulate the hormone and check TSH level every 2 months.
There are several options for the overactive thyroid regulation. Consult your doctor for the best way to proceed.
